i loved this movie for many, many reasons. but one of the things i found refreshing in this movie was how beautiful and simple it was. i felt that the costume design and props did such a good job at portraying what i think england in the 1930's would be like. i found the clothes to be vintage, clean, and fashionable. not far off from the jcrew spring line.

love her dress!! but really, look at the long pearl necklace. definitely seen that around lately.

great hat!

probably one of my favorite scenes in the movie. vintage couch, great rug, and run down painted wall. love!

i'm really digging her blouse. think paired with a pair of high wasted skinny chinos and wedge heels.

he's just so handsome in any role. i'm loving the high collar on the suit. this is back in fashion, definitely.

*i posted this originally to my personal blog, but felt it was so necessarily for an amazing amount of readers (mostly guys) to know how to properly date, i decided to post here also. tell your friends!

hello gentlemen!!!

forget everything you know from tv or movies. forget what you hear from your guy friends or even ex-girlfriends. i am going to give you the short guide to having a successful dating life.

combining elements from dozens of horrible dates, i've made a list of things that hopefully will help you on your journey to long-lasting love, even if you are already in a relationship.

pre-date:

-ask her out with confidence. don't ever say "i understand if you don't want to" because that puts doubt in her head, subconciously or otherwise.

-don't be late unless you absolutely can't help it, in which case, notify her!

-offer to pick her up or arrange to meet her at a public location. don't have her come to your apartment if at all possible.

-please don't wear running shoes, especially if you went running in them that morning.

-even if you're not the cologne type of guy, smell good.

date:

-at a restaurant where you're getting seated, always let her walk right behind the hostess and follow her. if you like her, put her hand gently on her upper back and "guide" her. girls really like this.

-even if you're "just kidding", never, EVER insult her. ("you're such a nerd!" does count as an insult.)

-if the conversation gets awkward, always have a few "would you rather's" up your sleeve. (see bottom for a few suggestions)

-really listen to what she's saying. don't think about how you're going to respond while she's talking or else you might not actually hear what she's telling you, resulting in an embarrassing response.

-pay for everything, even if you don't really hit it off. if she offers to go dutch, refuse!! you're the guy. don't let chivalry die! (honestly, i'd rather have him pay for one date and me pay for the next than split the check at the table. its so much less awkward.)

-if you eat a heavier dinner, ask if she'd like to take a walk afterwards. its much better than sitting for another couple hours, feeling incredibly full!

-have a plan for if things go well, and have another plan for if things don't. use your discretion as to which plan you carry out.

post date/ sleepover:

-if you do end up taking her home that night, or if she is from out of town and plans on sleeping over at your apartment, please have a clean bath AND hand towel for her that is separate from yours! she may or may not use it. but it needs to be there.

-wash the sheets on your bed. if its too soon (first date?) for you to have her sleep in your bed with you, offer your bed to her and you take the couch.

-sleepovers are not always about sex. you can still continue to get to know each other into the night. don't be frustrated if she plays hard to get.

-offer her coffee (don't forget the cream and sugar!), juice, and toast in the morning. even if she refuses, have it available. don't let her starve.

what now?:

-text her the next day after the date (or the day after that if she spends the night) and thank her for a wonderful time. games are useless if you like someone. so don't wait too long.

-even if you didn't have a great time, text her anyway and thank her for taking her time to be with you. (again, don't let chivalry die!)

-be honest in how you feel. if you think you'd like to pursue it, tell her. if you don't, tell her! honesty is really the best policy, and playing games or beating around the bush is the worst thing you can do.

this makes me cry every time. included is the history behind the music.

The film Miss Sarajevo is a documentary by Bill Carter about a beauty pageant held in the midst of war-torn Sarajevo, Bosnia. The winner was a 17 year old blonde girl called Inela Nogić. Carter traveled to Sarajevo in the winter of 1993 to offerhumanitarian aid and quickly found himself in the heart of the conflict. He lived for six months in a burnt out office building, subsisting on baby food and whatever water he could find in the rivers and sewers and delivering food and medicine to those in need.

Carter originally contacted U2 while they were on their Zoo TV Tour to show audiences the real people involved, feeling that the western media was ignoring the human aspect of the war. The band arranged for several satellite link-ups where Carter gave the locals — who had been cut off from communication with the rest of Europe for about a year and a half at this point — an opportunity to be heard before stadiums of thousands. The link-ups were brief and unedited.

"The idea was simple, instead of doing what the news does, which is entertain you, I wanted to do something that the news rarely does, make a person care about the issue...I wanted young people in Europe to see the people in the war, I didn't want them to see politicians or religious leaders or military spokesmen."

Carter had his camera sent to him from his home in California so he could film the documentary (which was produced by Bono) with the same goal of exposing people to the individuals living through the war. "The war is just a backdrop, it could be any war, the point is the vitality of the human spirit to survive, [to] laugh, to love, and to move on, that is something we will be addressing always."

The song protests the war in Bosnia, criticizing the international community for its inability to stop the war or help those affected by it. It was the only single released from the album. Its video combines clips from Bill Carter's documentary with footage from the Passengers' first performance of the song at the 1995 "Pavarotti and Friends" concert in Modena. Clips from the documentary contain striking imagery, such as a shot of beauty pageant contestants holding up a banner with the words "DON'T LET THEM KILL US," as seen on the single's artwork.

as a child, itzhak came down with polio which left him paralyzed in his legs. he couldn't walk and couldn't play outside with his friends. so he practiced the violin. after noticing his natural talent for music, his parents entered him into a music conservatory. he was 13 when he came to the united states and played on the ed sullivan show (see video). he later went on to julliard and became on e of the greatest violinists of our time.

we need to use what we have. what an amazing lesson at taking what life throws at you and making the best of it.
